Meet Kemada

The heart behind Bassa Yoga. A teacher who loves yoga deeply and wants every body, at every age, to feel like they belong here.

Kemada, founder of Bassa Yoga

Trinidad to Barbados

Strength in body, peace in mind

Kemada is a Trinidadian yoga enthusiast who now calls Barbados home, and she believes good health should welcome everyone. She talks you through each breath, explains the why behind every pose, and shapes the class around whoever happens to walk in that day. She has a real soft spot for seniors and for anyone who is just starting out.

The journey

How Bassa Yoga came to be

  1. Her roots

    Always on the move

Kemada grew up in Trinidad as the kind of person who could never sit still for long. Over the years she has thrown herself into all sorts of sport, from swimming and basketball to dragon boat, volleyball and even martial arts. Staying active was never a chore for her. It was simply how she liked to live.

  2. Falling for yoga

    A practice that stuck

Out of all the things she tried, yoga is the one that truly stayed with her. She has been practising for eleven years now, drawn in by the way it asks for both strength and stillness at the same time. It was never about recovering from anything. She simply fell in love with the practice, and what began as another way to move slowly became a daily habit she could not imagine living without.

  3. Trained in India

    Certified at the source

When she decided to teach, Kemada went straight to the birthplace of yoga. She earned her certification in India through a scholarship programme that she was the only person in the entire Caribbean to be awarded. It was genuinely hard. The training asked everything of her, and she came home with a depth of knowledge and a respect for the practice that still shapes every single class she leads.

  4. Sharing it with others

    Eight years of teaching

For the past eight years Kemada has been guiding other people through their own practice. In August 2019 she shared her very first post and Bassa Yoga was born. The idea behind it was simple and close to her heart. Good health should be within reach for everyone, especially seniors and anyone nervous about taking their very first step onto the mat.

  5. New beginnings

    Finding home in Barbados

A love of adventure and a real need to grow are what carried Kemada to Barbados. She felt it was time to spread her wings, so she brought Bassa Yoga with her and opened a warm, easy going studio on the island where every body, at every age, is welcome to slow down, breathe and find a little more balance under the Bajan sun.

“The fight should always be to stay fit.”
